I am constantly reminded of the many reasons I’m lucky to live in Breckenridge. The 300 days of sunshine and 300″ of annual snowfall are a good start to my long list. And, of course, the massive playground right in my backyard, also known as the Ten Mile Range, is certainly nothing to scoff at. However, today I’m feeling lucky because I just discovered that my favorite brewery has introduced a new IPA.
That’s right, our very own Breckenridge brewery has just begun serving their new Lucky U IPA, which just happens to be my favorite flavor of brew. The hoppiness of this beer makes it distinct, but the flavor that compliments the hops makes it extremely drinkable. While my plan is to head over to the Breckenridge brewery this Friday for Happy Hour, I’m already growing a bit concerned that this beer might cause more frequent Happy Hour trips. For now, I’ll just take it one beer at a time.
The Breckenridge Ski Resort opens on November 12th this year, meaning my countdown is under the two month mark (at one month, I start drawing big black X’s on my calendar). Of course, our early season snow dusting has gotten me excited about the yearly preparation for opening day. So, what’s on your agenda? What will you make your first run?
Remember, for all my friends and family out there, opening week in Breckenridge is my favorite holiday. Over the past few years, I’ve made it my yearly tradition to throw an Opening Eve party, and this year will be no different. However, I’m encouraging all my out-of-town friends to get together and book Breckenridge home rentals. It’s not that I’m getting tired of friends sleeping on my couch, it’s that my friends are outgrowing my tiny apartment. So, make your reservations and join me for the year’s best holiday: Opening Day!! The countdown is on.
Someone recently asked me if I thought we’d see snow in Breckenridge this year before Halloween. My response was, “I sure hope so.” After all, it most always snows in October in the Colorado high country.
However, like the rest of Summit County, I was beyond surprised to wake up yesterday to a couple of inches of September snow. As I searched the back of my dresser drawers for gloves in preparation to attack the car with it’s first scrape of the season, I couldn’t help but laugh.
In Breckenridge, we pray for snow and we relish powder days, using them as a cause of celebration. But snow in September??? I certainly hope that, in exchange of fall, this early snow means a record year for powder days! Who’s with me?
I’m not trying to start any political debates here by bringing up the issue of health care reform. Regardless of what you believe, I hope you can at least agree that taking better care of ourselves on a personal level is one way to achieve better health.
As a proud resident of the state of Colorado, I feel qualified to say that a healthy lifestyle is not all that hard to achieve. The Rocky Mountain state consistently ranks as one of the top places to live for healthy and fit people. So, why not take some advice from us? Get outside and play. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s guaranteed to keep you out of the doctor’s office.
Breckenridge is the perfect town for fit and active residents and visitors. I’d love to tell you more, but I’m on my way out for a run.
Running in Breckenridge is one way to keep your health costs low
Continental Falls is one of my favorite fall hikes in Breckenridge…and I mean that in terms of autumn and waterfalls. This past weekend was the perfect time to get out for an early autumn hike. The aspens are just beginning to turn from glowing green to vibrant yellow, a transformation that only happens for a few short weeks that define the fall season in the high country.
If I were you, I’d get out to Continental Falls before you miss autumn in its prime and the chance to see one of Breck’s best waterfall shots to match. This hike is easy to find–just head south on Hwy. 9 from Breck, turn right on Spruce Creek Road (about 2-1/2 miles out of town), and stay on that dirt road for a little over a mile until you see the trailhead and parking area.
